Under The Shadow of His Wings

Have you ever noticed that being under the shade or shadow of something, always provide for you a sense of coolness, protection or safety? One of the ways you can notice this most is on a hot sunny day, where you are desperate to fined somewhere to shelter from the sun. Have you noticed that when you eventually find a shelter, wherever the shadow stretches to, is always a cool area. But just outside of the shadow, you will begin to feel the heat of the sun again.

Jesus is saying that whatever you are trying to seek refuge from in your life, whatever is uncomfortable, whatever is unbearable, whatever is scary or frightening. You can find a place of shelter and protection with Him. As a hen, gathers her chicks when there is danger and they run to safety under her wings, so Jesus our Heavenly father wants us to run to the safety of His wings, when we are faced with the vicious heat, of our social, economic and physical sun. As well as the various psychological and spiritual storms that we face in our everyday lives.

Psalm 91:4 says "He will cover you with His feathers; under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and rampart." Rampart means, the defensive wall of a castle or walled city.“ This verse is often interpreted as a metaphor for God's protection and care for his people. It is a comforting image of finding safety and security in God's presence.

So why go through life in a state of solitude, feeling fearful and unprotected? God want you to know and trust the safety His wings provides. One song writer, puts it this way;

1 Under His wings I am safely abiding.

Tho' the night deepens and tempests are wild,

Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me.

He has redeemed me, and I am His child.

2 Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!

How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!

Often when earth has no balm for my healing,

There I find comfort, and there I am bles.

3 Under His wings, oh, what precious enjoyment!

There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;

Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me.

Resting in Jesus, I’m safe evermore.

Under His wings, under His wings,

Who from His love can sever?

Under His wings my soul shall abide,

Safely abide forever.
