Unity With Humility
Do you know the story of the pigeons trapped in the net? After searching for food a flock of pigeons were trapped under a hunter’s net trying desperately to escape the approaching hunter. Individually each pigeons jumped, flapped their wings, and pecked at the net, not even realising they were entangling themselves more and creating a chaotic mass of panic and strife. Each pigeon battling to save their own life, making it even harder for the pigeon next to them the save theirs. Imagine the anarchy!
But there was one wise old King pigeon, who humbled his own self and own need to escape, and advised the pigeons to stop, each take a piece of the net, and fly up together, all at the same time, all on one accord. And so the pigeons joined forces, each took a piece of the net, flew up together, and escaped the hunter, every life saved. A mouse came along and gnawed away at the net with his tiny teeth and all the flock was freed……..
Philippians 2:24 tells us that “if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others”.
In this time of fasting, let us reflect on the power that comes with unity. As with the pigeons, moving in different directions and working simply for our own gains, will bring chaos and anarchy. But by being humble in spirit, obedient to guidance, and unified in heart, gathered together in one accord, each individual looking out for each individual, then the flock will soar. It doesn’t take a mighty move of action, just a small gesture of genuine humility can go a mighty long way.
During this time of fasting, God is reminding us of the importance of love, of oneness and of unity, but I believe He is also reminding us, unity begins with humility.
God Bless You
